North Camp

Pottery and other artefacts in the ploughsoil of North Camp

The camp that we refer to as ‘North Camp’ is north of the A30 and just to the east of Manor Farm. We really know very little about this camp. The field is ploughed most years and there is a faint trace of a track, and broken artefacts appear in the ploughsoil. We excavated three small trenches in this field as part of the ‘Dig for History’ event with Chalke Valley History Festival. As well as lots of broken glass and pottery dating to the First World War, we also found post holes from a hut. Although we are confident there was a camp at this location, we don’t know how it was laid out or which units were stationed here.
